Dual Credit FAQ
WHAT IS DUAL CREDIT?
-Opportunity for HS students to enroll in public post-secondary institutions in SD and earn credits toward HS diploma and post-secondary degree/certificate.
-Courses are offered by post-secondary faculty, governed by post-secondary institution's policies, and follow the post-secondary institution’s processes for admissions, registration, billing and grade reporting.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM ELIGIBLE?
Applicants must meet one of the four requirements below:

- High school JUNIOR eligible to enroll in a high school in South Dakota who meets one of the following requirements:
- earn an ACT composite score of 24 reflective of the 70% percentile; OR
- rank in upper one-third of their graduating class; OR
- earn a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale;
- High school SENIOR eligible to enroll in a high school in South Dakota who meets one of the following requirements:
- earn an ACT composite score of 21 reflective of the 50% percentile; OR
- rank in the upper one-half of their graduating class; OR
- earn a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale;
- High school JUNIOR or SENIOR eligible to enroll in a high school in South Dakota who meets all of the following Undergraduate admissions requirements:
- ACT score of 18 (or 21 for USD & SDSM&T); AND
- successful completion of coursework requirements
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of advanced mathematics
- 3 years of laboratory science
- 3 years of social studies
- 1 year of fine arts
- Take one of the assessments below and meet the required score(s):
- 10th Grade ACT Aspire Summative Assessment - Score 434 or higher
- Accuplacer (Sentence Skills - Score 86 or higher AND Elementary Algebra - Score 76 or higher)
HOW MANY DUAL CREDIT CLASSES AM I ALLOWED TO TAKE?
- Juniors will be allowed to enroll in 1 dual credit or online course per semester if they qualify
- Seniors will be allowed to enroll in a maximum of two dual credit and/or online courses per semester if they qualify

WHAT ARE THE DUAL CREDIT COURSES WORTH AT SULLY BUTTES HIGH SCHOOL?
- Each dual credit semester course that is passed will be awarded 1 credit on the student's high school transcript if the course is 3 or more credits and 1/2 credit if it is a 2 credit class or less

DO I NEED TO MEET ANY ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO ENROLL IN CERTAIN DUAL CREDIT CLASSES?
- Yes!
- If you are taking a dual credit English course, you must meet the minimum ACT score of 18
- If you are taking a dual credit Math course, you must meet the minimum Math Index Score of 1150 (there are some exceptions - discuss with Mrs. Sweeter)
- Certain classes may require pre-requisites

WHAT DOES DUAL CREDIT COST?
- Dual credit is set to reflect 1/3 of the SDBOR cost per credit - this spring it will $48.33/credit
- Each student is responsible for cost of tuition and any other related expenses with the course to include textbooks, lab fees, etc. for dual credit courses

WHAT IF I FAIL A DUAL CREDIT COURSE?
- Any student who fails a dual credit course anytime during their junior or senior year, will be ineligible to enroll in any other online or dual credit courses for the remainder of high school
- The grade will still be included on their high school AND college transcript

HOW DO I DECIDE WHAT DUAL CREDIT CLASS TO TAKE?
- Most dual credit classes are directed towards freshmen college students - or "generals" (SDBOR SGR Goals)
- It is best to take a look at your intended major and plan of study - SDBOR Program Guide Sheets
- Talk with Mrs. Sweeter if you need more direction

dual credit - how to navigate your course
I KNOW I APPLIED, BUT AM I REGISTERED?
1. Check your K12 (or whatever email you put on form) for a welcome message from your university
2. PRINT THIS EMAIL OUT! Note the Student ID number that you are given in this email. You will need it to set up your course
3. After this registration confirmation email, all future communication will be sent to your university email account. Check your university email account daily. You will receive deadline date for fee payment and attendance confirmation through this email account.

- Access SDePay: 'View Account' and 'Pay Your Bill'
- Complete Attendance Confirmation
- Find your official final course grade
- My BORIS Account
- Follow the prompts to access your user ID (WRITE THIS DOWN!) and to have a temporary password emailed to you
- Make sure you choose your K12 email address, as we have not set up your university email yet!
- Enter your username and password at https://boris.sdbor.edu/idm/wa-links.cfm
- Then click the Students Link
- Complete "Attendance Confirmation" by the first week of the semester. The Attendance Confirmation link is located on the first page of your WebAdvisor account
- Bills are due no later than January 18, 2017
- Log in and click on "SDePay/View Accounts". A paper billing statement will not be mailed to you!
- Pay online with a credit card or echeck, or print statement and mail in payment to your university's cashiers office.
- Your bill may not reflect the $48.33 per credit hour rate immediately. ONLY SUBMIT PAYMENT FOR THIS RATE!

STEP 2: SET UP DESIRE2LEARN (D2L)
- Every Board of Regents university uses Desire2Learn (D2L)
- This is where your class "lives"
- If you are taking online classes, you must set up your D2L account to access the course syllabus, content, assignments, tests, and course emails

- Your D2L username and password should be the same as for WebAdvisor. WRITE THIS DOWN!
- You will find out what textbook you need on your syllabus
- D2L has its own email system that you will have to check in addition to your university email
- Click "I'm New to D2L" and follow the prompts
STEP 3: SET UP YOUR UNIVERSITY EMAIL

- CAREFULLY follow the directions for your university. Each one is different! Some universities may have sent information for login to you K12 student email address, so try there before contacting your university's help desk

COMMUNICATING WITH THE UNIVERSITY
- College teachers and universities do very little communicating with Mrs. Sweeter or the high school.
- They will NOT send me:

- Notices if you have missing or late work
- Information on how to log into your classes
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU
- Log in EVERY day
- Know the deadlines and due dates & turn work in on time
- Every instructor is different, but don't expect to be able to complete assignments whenever you want. Most instructors assign deadlines and due dates for all assignments and expect you to know all due dates and complete assignments on time
- Due dates and deadlines can be found in your syllabus, course schedule on D2L, or BOTH!
- Contact the instructor if assistance is needed regarding assignments
- Be responsible for your education
- You are a part time college student - your college professor will not adjust his/her schedule to match your high school schedule
- Log in EVERY day
- Know the deadlines and due dates & turn work in on time

DROPPING A DUAL CREDIT COURSE
- Contact Mrs. Sweeter
- Wednesday, January 18th will be the last day to drop for the spring semester
- You will need to fill out a drop form to complete this process - your parent must sign!
- You will have to add another class from our high school curriculum
**Students who stop attending class without processing an official withdrawal will stay in the course roll and be assigned an "F" for the course.
**Under BOR institutions, students are limited to 6 withdrawals in their undergraduate career, including dual credit courses. Further withdrawals will be assigned a failing grade.
- Contact Mrs. Sweeter
- Wednesday, January 18th will be the last day to drop for the spring semester
